In Term 4, Grade 1 and 2 students used movement, body percussion, speech and singing to help them learn the piece ‘Terracotta Pot’. This Orff-based unit encouraged experimentation with sounds and creativity. Students rehearsed and performed the song for the class. Red hot pot!!
In Term 2, Grade 1 and 2 students learnt the African greeting song ‘Funga Alafia’. They worked on different parts of the song and then added them together as a whole class arrangement. They learnt the singing part with the actions, the body percussion part and how to play the melody on a tuned percussion instrument.
In Term 3, Grade 1 and 2 students began learning the ukulele. Students found out about the history of the instrument and explored different chords and strumming patterns. They learnt how to play the song ‘The Funky Fish’ and got to choose which parts they felt most comfortable playing. Here’s a sample of the action!
Grade 1 and 2 students worked very hard on their Animal Raps this term. Each group chose a different animal and brainstormed some words and ideas for their rap. They then had to think of rhymes that would suit their animal and write their rap using a composition template. As a class, the students chose some drum and bass loops using the GarageBand software to create a backing track for their class rap. They then had to practise along to the backing track and finally record their raps using an iPad. We even had to wear headphones like in a real recording studio!! Yo, yo…check below to hear our class animal raps and see what we got up to…
