It’s been all about robots this term for Grade 1 and 2! We started off with some robot sketches, moved on to an enlarged robot painting and finished with a mixed-media robot relief artwork. Students learnt about what relief means, in terms of a fusion between 2D and 3D. Students had the opportunity to use a variety of different materials, such as tiles, buttons and eclectic pieces of metal and wood. The results are some fantastic robots, which are bursting with their inventor’s creativity! What I loved most about this project was seeing the girls really embrace the robot theme. At first lots of the girls were like “Ohhh robots. I don’t like robots!” which got me thinking, “Do they actually not like robots? Or do they think girls can’t like robots?” However, over the term the girls have slowly embraced the robots and have absolutely loved designing and creating their circuitboard friends! I doubt I’ll ever hear a girl from Grade 1 or 2 tell me they don’t like robots anymore! To see this display, please visit the ground floor hallway, in the main building.
Over the past few weeks Prep students have had the opportunity to work with a variety of different mediums, such as paint, tissue paper and textured papers and have also been able to work on their fine-motor skills such as cutting and tracing. All these fantastic skills and experiences, have resulted in these vibrant and beautiful mixed-media rocket collages, which are now displayed outside the art room. It’s been great to see the students so engaged in this project and excited to find out which part of the artwork they were going to work on each week. This project also allowed students to experience printmaking and abstract painting – a real all-rounder!
This term students in the Senior Art Extension Class have been designing and painting their own artwork onto skateboard decks. Students had complete free reign to design whatever they liked for their work and the results are incredible! The students were inspired by graphic designers such as Andrea Preis. There are still three skateboards that are unfinished, which I will photograph later and add to this post. Enjoy!
Term 3 was all about Tim Burton for the Grade 3/4s! As part of the Artists as Illustrators and Filmmakers unit, students looked at Burton’s films and artwork and composed a spooky house landscape using paint and black markers. Students learnt about silhouettes and positive and negative space. The display is up in the front foyer outside Julie and Rod’s offices, just in time for Halloween!
Term 2 was all about Ancient Egypt for the Grade 5/6s. Over 12 weeks, students learnt the history behind royal Egyptian burials and created these intricately detailed artworks. Students focused on pattern, repetition, balance and contrast and the results are truly stunning! To see these works, please visit the display outside the art room late next week.
Art has been a bit of a history lesson this term! Over 10 weeks, students learnt how to draw realistic animals, celtic knots and medieval calligraphy. In addition to all this technical drawing, the students also learnt about the history behind illuminated scriptures in Medieval England. The brief for the students was to pick an animal that they felt represented their personality. Although you only get to see the finished pieces, it would be worth popping in to the art room with your child to have a peek in their art journals, because their developmental designs are just as stunning as the finished works. As most of you know, this year I am running a pilot program, which aims to give gifted students in the arts 100 minutes of art each week, instead of 50 minutes. The Junior Art Extension Class has been looking at the work of Jephan de Villiers , a French artist, who creates whimsical and peculiar sculptures of figures from natural materials. The students have spent upwards of 8 weeks on them and they are nearly all finished! The degree of attention to detail, technique, craftsmanship and composition of their pieces is astounding. They have captured the essence of de Villiers’ work beautifully and their level of skill at such a young age is quite inspiring. There will be a display coming soon!
Stuart – “My artwork is about two people who meet at a tree. They cover the tree in leaves. Then they had babies and they made the tree into their home.”
Zoe – “My artwork looks like lots of amazed people looking out from a large hole in a hollow tree. The little people are looking at a group of ginormous people having a picnic.”
For the past 6 weeks the grade 1/2’s have been focusing on the music idea of pulse aka/sometimes known as the beat. Through a series of musical games and activities such as the world famous ‘Rhythm Detectives’ and ‘Whats The Time Mr Wolf!?’, the students have been embodying pulse as an essential musical element.
Taking things to another level, the students were then set a task of working in small collaborative groups to compose a short rhythmic composition using a 4 count grid.
Stage one, was to compose the Grid Rhythms using body percussion and rehearse to perform in front of the class.
Stage two was to then apply the body percussion to small handheld classroom percussion instruments. Essential to making this work was the students ability to apply their sense of pulse so that they could rehearse and perform together.

For the past 5 weeks grade 1/2 students have been participating in various musical games and activities that involve them experiencing pulse or beat. They have played games such as ‘Rhythm detectives’, ‘What’s The Time Mr Wolf’ and Concentration Elimination. Each of these games require the students to keep a steady pulse to play the game. The students have learnt so far that knowing where the pulse/beat in music resides, is vital for a group of musicians to play together.
Over the next few weeks the students will be working in groups to compose a short rhythmic composition using a 4 count grid. This week they began thinking up interesting body percussion and voice sounds to include in their grids. Once the students have composed and mastered their body percussion pieces they will perform them to the class. The next step is for the students to then use hand held percussion instruments instead of body percussion. The students will then rehearse and perform them to the class. Hopefully these performances will also be recorded and posted on this blog.
The grade 5/6 students officially started their recording projects last week. Over the next 4-5 weeks the students will be collecting numerous sounds from around the school. These sounds will form the basis of a larger soundscape or rhythmic composition.
The learning intention of this session was to experiment with the hardware and software to discover the limitations and possibilities. The students had to work in pairs using Garageband on the iPad to record a series of sounds and see if they could loop them into a short rhythmic piece of music.
