Film Project

The Grade 4s and 3/4M have been busy creating some amazing stop animation films as part of their combined art and music unit this term. Students were given a topic and asked to create a film using 2D materials. They could use paint, coloured paper, pencils or textas. Ms. S and Chelsea have been amazed at the creativity of the students and their ability to collaborate and make creative decisions. Here are some photos of the process so far. Watch this space for more information about the Film presentation night.

Grade 3 and 4 in Music and Art

Music and Art is being combined this term for Grade 3/4 students.

Grade 3 Map Making Project

The Grade 3 students will be working on a map making unit this term, which will combine their art and music skills. This unit will enable students to explore and experiment with visual and musical art techniques within a cartography project. During this project, students will have the opportunity to collaboratively create a map artwork, which showcases their spatial skills and their ability to compose a score to express the themes of the map. Students will learn about the relationship between images and sound and how the two components can be manipulated to create a narrative with continuity. The project is heavily driven by collaboration, enabling students to execute a joint creative vision, by working together to problem-solve, develop their ideas, share their ideas and to produce a finished artefact by the end of the unit. The project will culminate in a celebration of student learning. At assembly, the Bell Primary School Community will be invited to see the students’ performance artwork involving the map, live music score and story.

Grade 4 Stop Animation Project

This unit will enable students to explore and experiment with visual and musical art techniques within a stop animation medium. During this project, students will have the opportunity to create a film which showcases their animation skills and their ability to compose a score. Students will learn about the relationship between images and sound and how the two components can be manipulated to create a stop animation film with continuity. The project is heavily driven by collaboration, enabling students to execute a joint creative vision, by working together to problem-solve, develop their ideas, share their ideas and to produce a finished artefact by the end of the unit. Students will be required to contemplate their learning by means of ongoing reflection and a self-assessment rubric. The project will culminate in a celebration of student learning, through an arts event in which the Bell Primary School Community will be invited to a screening night to view the films and the process works.

Grade 1/2 Pumpkins

Grade 1 and 2 students created these beautifully vibrant pumpkin artworks last term, inspired by the work of contemporary Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. This was a great project, as it showed the children that you can still be a female artist at the age of 89 in the very heavily male dominated art arena, which we live in today. The students loved learning about Yayoi Kusama’s artwork and were very inspired by her outfits and different looks. These wonderful pumpkins are on display in the main hallway just to the right of the library doors.

Senior Art

Over two terms, students in the Senior Art Extension program created these stunning eccentric self-portraits inspired by the work of Australian artist, Del Kathryn Barton. The focus for this work was primarily on painting, but students also incorporated printmaking, collaging and drawing techniques. The artworks are currently displayed in two locations, in the front entrance and outside the art room. I’d also like to congratulate the Senior Art Extension students on such a fantastic semester of work.

Japanese koi scrolls

The Grade 5/6s have been hard at work this term creating these beautiful Japanese koi scroll artworks. The focus for this artwork was on drawing anatomically correct fish and showing movement and rhythm in the water. The students used water colour paints, decorative paper, wooden sticks and wool. What I find interesting is that all the students have created very unique artworks, despite the fact they all painted the same type of fish, koi. If you would like to see these artworks up close, there is a display in the front office and in the main hallway. Enjoy!

Chinese Willow Plates

As part of the Asian art unit this term, the Grade 1/2 students created these beautifully detailed Chinese Willow Plates. During this project, students learnt about monochromatic artworks, with a focus on hues. Students also learnt about the story behind the willow design and used this as inspiration for the composition and subject matter of their piece.

Koi sketches

This term the Grade 5/6s are making Japanese koi scroll artworks. During the past few weeks, students have been sketching and painting koi in preparation for their final work. Here are some beautiful process shots of them exploring different approaches to drawing and painting the koi. Watch this space in the next few weeks to see their final works!

Chinese Willow Design

The Grade 1/2s have been doing some exquisite drawings this week and I just had to share them with you all! Students have been learning about the relationship between the west and east and how different art forms from the east inspired interior design movements in Europe during the 19th century. This week, students learnt about the story of the Chinese willow design and created a series of sketches focusing on different elements of the design. Their attention to detail and natural architectural drawing ability is truly breathtaking. Come take a look!
