3/4M Haunted House And Character Compositions

This term grade 3&4 students have been adopting the role of composers. Their brief was to compose a number of short compositions that would ‘bring to life’ a character that they designed as well as their Tim Burton inspired ‘Haunted House’ and characters. To do this the students would learn to use a complex web based music creation tool Soundation.com. Soundation provides a palette of over 700 pre recorded sound samples. These consist of melodic, rhythmic and soundscape sounds. Soundation gives students agency over their creative ideas. They are able to experience success through arranging the numerous loops into a piece of music or soundscape that adds to the characterisation and atmosphere of their art work. To get more of an idea how Soundation works please go to the website and have a go. I am sure you will be amazed.

Grade 3/4 Students Adopting The Role OF DJ’s Through Incredibox

Incredibox.com is a fabulous online music creation tool. Using pre recorded loops it allows the students to adopt the role of DJ’s. This week grades 3/4 Bell PS students were set a task to arrange and compose a piece of music. They really needed to think about how to structure their music so that it made sense musically and not just some random number of loops. Before the students could record their song they needed to rehearse it so that they knew exactly when to bring in each part. Please click on the urls below to listen to some wonderful student creativity. And if you are moved by what you hear please post a comment. Perhaps you would like to go onto incredibox.com yourself and record your own song and post the url in the comment box to share with the students.

Term 3 In Music

Prep

Exploring Pitch

In Term 3 Prep students will be exploring pitch. Using body movement, voice and tuned percussion instruments, preps will be looking at the role that pitch plays in music. The students will be engaging in a number of games and activities that will help students achieve a deeper understanding of how pitch works.

Grade 1/2

What’s The Story? Hip Hop and Rhyme:

Grade 1&2 students will be digging deeper into the concepts of rhythm and rhyme. Drawing on their prior knowledge of rhythm and beat from last semester, grade 1&2 students will be exploring rhyme and meter through the musical genre Rap and Hip Hop. The students will then be creating their own Raps and Hip Hop backing track. These creative opportunities will link in with the artists as illustrators focus in art looking at Dr Seuss.

Grades 3/4

Atmospheric Music Using Technology

Drawing from their prior knowledge of film music the grade 3/4 students will be adopting the role of composers to create pieces of music that help portray a certain atmosphere of a particular scene and characterisation. Using music creation software and other technologies students will be working collaboratively to compose a series of short compositions. These compositions will link in with the ‘Artists’ as illustrators work that they will be undertaking in art. Student finished artefacts will be published on the Arts@Bell Blog.

Grades 5/6

Inquiry Into the relationship between materials, sound and aesthetic to create a performance.

This is an exciting term for the Year 5s and 6s and their specialist lessons. Music and Visual Art will be fused to create an in-depth Sound Art Inquiry Project that will span the entirety of Term Three. The students will create sound sculptures and through exploration will develop an understanding of the relationship between sound and sculpture. Through collaboration, individual work, digital-portfolios and culminating in a performance at the end of the term, the students will explore the way in which the line between music and art can be blurred to create a hybrid work of art.

Melodic Ostinato and Improvisation

The grade 3 & 4’s have been learning about ostinati (short repeated rhythmic or melodic pattern) as well as improvisation. Over the past couple of lessons the students have been learning a short melodic otinato on xylophones and metalophones that will accompany their improvisations. For last weeks ‘See, Think, Wonder’ musical analysis we looked at the fabulous Bobby McFerrin’s vocal improvisation

Welcome

cropped-arts-2a4vxro.jpg

Welcome Parents, Teachers, Guardians, Grandparents, Friends and of course the stars of the blog, the Students!

This blog is a way to share the wonderful artwork and music that the students have created at Bell P.S. Sometimes you might like to see what students are doing in other year levels different from your own child’s or you may just be curious to see what your child is up to in music or the art room. This blog is a facilitator for just that and will keep you up-to-date with your child’s artistic education.

This blog will operate as an online gallery and will be updated as students finish their works and also during the process of work. So, it would be wise to save this page as a bookmark on your computer so you never miss a post!

We are delighted to share the artwork and music of Bell Primary School’s students with you all and we hope you enjoy celebrating their artistic successes.

Please use the categories listed in the right hand sidebar to find grade related posts eg: If you are looking for Prep Art you can select the category “Art Prep” and you will then see all the latest posts of the Preps enjoying art.

Being Conductors

Preps Go Bananas! The preps have been amazing considering we are only 3 weeks into school. A highlight has been Rhythm Detectives and the ‘Hello’ Song. However, their favourite song has to be Banana’s

Over the first couple of weeks  grade 1 and 2 students had the opportunity to conduct he class ‘Gibberish’ orchestra. Using green for start and red for stop they were able to control the orchestra. The conductors also had signs that read ‘opera’, ‘mouse’, ‘slow motion’, ‘fast motion’. This added another dimension to the Gibberish orchestra allowing the student who were conductors to use their creative thinking to create interesting sounds.

The grade 3 and 4’s have been enjoying their drama and musical games as well as the new vocal warm up tongue twisters. They have also begun to learn a new song ‘Wake Up’ which, I have to say, was sung beautifully at this mornings assemble after only learning it last week.

Grade 5&6’s have begun their exploration of Science Fiction.  Last week the students activated and shared  their prior knowledge around the theme of Sci Fi. This week the students will be engaging in a mini inquiry so that they have the necessary background knowledge to then begin their planning of their Sci Fi narrative of which they will then compose music for.

Let The Music Begin!

Wow! It’s been a fabulous start to the beginning of the school year that is Music@Bell 2014. The students have been involved in a myriad of drama games, rhythm games, singing games and songs. Its so great to go over and especially teach some old favourites to the new preps. The students have loved games such as Rhythm Detectives , Concentration Elimination, Heads Up and everyone’s favourite Pass The Beat Around the room.

The grade 3-6’s were extremely creative with their drama activities/games where they where restricted by the fact that they were not allowed to talk for the whole lesson. ‘Yeah Right!” I hear you say 😉 but they actually were able to do it. It’s not easy for a small group of 12 students to form the shape of a speed boat with driver and acrobatic water skiers being pulled behind it.

There was lots of thinking to be had as well with this terms thinking routine ‘See, Think, Wonder’. This routine forms the basis of the students weekly musical analysis and appreciation.

Was great to hear so many students singing well at the last whole school assembly and the 1/2’s were amazing with the ‘hello’ song as well. I am looking forward to continuing working with the students at these assemblies as there is nothing more uplifting than singing as a mass group and its a great way to start the week.
