What’s happening in music this term?

Prep
In Term 4, Preps will be exploring music with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander focus as part of a combined Arts unit. They will look at Indigenous stories, dance and song and begin understanding how all of these have a powerful connection to the land, nature and animals of Australia. Preps will work on creating an animal soundscape that connects to some of the work they will be doing in Art based on the book ‘An Australian 1,2,3 of Animals’ by Indigenous artist Bronwyn Bancroft.

Grade 1 and 2
In Term 4, Grade 1 and 2 students will be exploring the music of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as part of a combined Arts unit. They will look at traditional Indigenous instruments and learn how to sing a song from the Torres Strait Islands along with accompanying actions. Students will break up into groups and work towards a performance by singing the song as a round. They will experiment with dynamics, tempo, body percussion and movement. Students will also learn how to read and play rhythms using the clap sticks.

Grade 3 and 4
In Term 4, Grade 3 and 4 students will be exploring the music of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as part of a combined Arts unit. They will learn how to sing ‘Taba Naba’ from the Torres Strait Islands and perform this along with the accompanying ‘sit-down’ dance. Students will learn how to read and play rhythms using the clap sticks and notate their own rhythms to accompany dances. They will also experiment with movement and body percussion.

Grade 5 and 6
Grade 5 and 6 students will be exploring the music of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as part of a combined Arts unit. They will start by looking at traditional instruments and the importance of music and art in Indigenous culture. The main focus this term will be on contemporary Indigenous music. Students will analyse significant songs such as ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’ and ‘My Island Home’. They will participate in student-led mini workshops on the keyboard, guitar, drums/percussion and voice and work towards arranging and performing a contemporary Indigenous song in a large ensemble.
