This term, Prep students will be introduced to composition by exploring pitch and other important musical elements. Students will learn how to sing then play simple melodies on tuned percussion instruments. They will deconstruct these melodies by identifying repeated patterns and will even create their own melodies. Preps will also learn that instruments can be categorised into different families according to their characteristics and how they are played.
Grade 1 and 2
In Term Three, Grade 1 and 2 students will be learning all about the musical instrument, the ukulele. They will learn to name the parts of the instrument, its history and how to hold the ukulele correctly. Students will learn how to play simple chords along with various strumming patterns through ‘call and response’. By reading simple chord charts, they will work towards playing a piece in a large class ensemble along to a backing track. Students will also practice using simple music vocabulary to respond to and describe music that they listen to.
Grade 3 and 4

Grade 5 and 6
In Term Three, Grade 5 and 6 students will participate in an Orff-based unit using tuned and untuned percussion. This approach integrates speech, singing, movement and instruments when learning music. Students will explore body percussion and learn ways to internalise rhythms through ball activities using throwing, catching and passing. By using correct playing technique, students will learn how to play various parts to a song and will need to practice their part and work towards performing in a large ensemble.
