What’s happening in music this term?

Prep
In Term 2, Preps will continue to build on their knowledge of the foundations of music including beat, pitch, dynamics and tempo. They will explore melody by singing and moving to various nursery rhymes and songs. They will also begin to learn to sing the national anthem. Preps will explore rhythm by creating simple beats and actions within a song. Students will practice identifying emotions such as happy and sad when listening to a range of different music styles. They will also look at rhythm and rhyme in simple chants and raps.

Grade 1 and 2
This term in Grade 1 and 2 music, it’s all about Rap! Through its origins in Hip-Hop, students will explore rhythm, rhyme and arranging. Students will be writing and recording their own Animal Raps in small groups. This will include working on composing a backing track as a class using the Garageband software. Groups will need to organise and rehearse their raps ready for the recording process. Students will also have the opportunity to listen to and analyse various nursery rhymes and raps to identify patterns in the music and understand how important rhythm and flow is in rap.

Grade 3 and 4
Yo, yo, yo…word up! Beatboxing is sooooo 2017! This year in Grades 3 and 4 it’s all about Rap and Hip-Hop! This term students will look at the Hip-Hop genre and learn specific techniques on how to rap. They will explore various rap music examples and use these to inspire them in creating their own rap. Students will use a template to help them structure their composition and will work together in a group to write and rehearse their rap using elements such as rhythm and rhyme. They will then perform and record their piece using the Garageband software.

Grade 5 and 6
Hip to the Hop and you don’t stop! This term, students in Grade 5/6 will look at the history of Hip-Hop music and its cultural significance. Students will learn various rapping skills and techniques such as the use of rhyme, slogans and ‘flow’ and will use these techniques to compose their own rap. They will be introduced to freestyle rap as a way of generating ideas for lyrics. Students will use the Garageband software to compose their backing track and record their rap. They will also need to consider the arrangement of their rap and include various elements of music in their composition.

    1. Thanks for the feedback Bec! I’ve had quite a few parents tell me they’ve been loving rediscovering the Fresh Prince with their kids. So glad to hear they’re bringing their learning back home to share with their families. Such a fun and exciting unit to share with them!
