This term in art, the Preps will be travelling back in time to learn about ancient civilisations and their unique art forms. Prep students will be starting with Egypt, with a particular focus on the icon of Bastet – the Egyptian god. Whilst learning about the cultural and spiritual significance of Bastet, students will create a painting, which depicts Bastet’s stature and iconography. Keeping with the theme of Egypt, students will create Egyptian collars, which will enable students to focus on their design and detail skills. Following on from these works, we will move west as we discover ancient Aztec mosaic masks. Students will create their own cool-coloured paper mosaic pieces, which will then form the texture of their masks.

Grade 1 and 2

As part of the Ancient Art unit this term, Grade 1 and 2 students will be looking at ancient Greek pots. Students will be able to explore the different shapes, imagery and styles of Greek pottery, which will then later inform their own 2D artwork. Students will employ the knowledge they have learnt about the iconography of Greek pottery to create a drawing, which showcases ancient Greek stylisation and aesthetics. Heading south from Greece, students will explore the art of ancient Egypt, with a particular focus on Pharaoh inspired self-portraits. During this artwork, students will learn about hieroglyphics and Egyptian gods. Students will turn a photograph of themselves into a painting, which depicts them as an ancient Egyptian King or Queen.

Grade 3 and 4

Grade 3 and 4 students will be travelling back in time to Medieval England as part of the Ancient Art unit this term! Students will be learning about the art form of medieval calligraphy and Celtic design. Armed with this information, they will create their own interpretation of the art form using their initials as basis for the work. This work will aim to help students understand the cultural significance of ancient scriptures and calligraphy and the aesthetic influence of Celtic stylisation. Moving southwest, students will be transported to Central America – the home of the Aztecs! Students will learn about the cultural significance of sun stones, Aztec calendars and their representation in contemporary central American society. Students will create their own large-scale sun stones with inspiration from the intricate detail seen in the original artifacts.

Grade 5 and 6

Grade 5 and 6 students will be transported back to when the Egyptian empire ruled supreme! Students will learn about the ancient Egyptians obsession with death and the after life, their burial rituals and the astonishing art, which adorned their tombs. Students will create a ‘royal’ self-portrait on gold paper, which will then be placed on a sarcophagus-shaped piece of paper, which they will design and paint in the style of Tutankhamun’s famous sarcophagus. To finish the term, students will sail northwest to England, where they will discover the world of medieval kings, knights and battles! Students will be examining the history of heraldry and coats of arms. Students will create their own coat of arm artwork, which will display aesthetics and compositional characteristics of original works, yet still be unique to them and their representation of their personality traits.
